RJF values relationships and sustainability. To achieve our mission, we select local visionary leaders (RJF Fellows) from rural communities and equip them to be change agents who engage and empower their communities to set goals, complete projects and realize their vision for improved education. Communities and youth work alongside Fellows, giving in-kind support for projects that demonstrate capacity for sustainability, scale and/or replicability of innovative solutions. We engage local governments, NGO partners and student mentors who support Fellows in participatory action research and the design, implementation, evaluation and scaling of projects. Our model includes the following components:

Providing Teachers in Nicaragua with Professional Development Opportunities

Teachers from rural communities in the San Juan del Sur Province of Nicaragua recognized that their teaching skills needed to be improved. They felt that their lack of exposure to new pedagogy, teacher mentorship and computer technology was limiting their ability to effectively reach their students or provide them with a high quality education. Providing Rural Youth in Nicaragua with Training in Computer Literacy

The remote coastal community of Tortuga, Nicaragua has a population of 672 and 42% of the population are under 20 years old. In 2013, only 35% of youth in Tortuga were attending school. A survey completed by the community revealed that residents had doubts about school due to the long journey to get there and the fact that the classes were not relevant to helping young people find future employment.
